When Lagna conjunct node and one outer planet as well, it can be considered in the same way as Kal Sarpa, because conjunct is worse than in between.
The effect of Kal Sarpa BY ITSLEF is minimal. But a Lagna conjunct Rahu is somewhat heavy. Anyone who has Rahu in the ascendent has something rather weighty to deal with in life, much more than just having Kal Sarpa by itself.
The nodes are intense. They are demons, or were demons, and their job is to agitate, disrupt, and otherwise trouble our life and mind. Rahu is more external and real, ketu more in the realm of feelings and thoughts.
When all the demigods stand together and see that they are flanked on both sides by these Rakshasas body parts, it is not an "easy going" moment for the gods. They don't like it. They do not welcome the demon nodes in their ranks, but they have to accept them as per Vishnu's wish.
So, when the nodes are prominent, is an uncomfortable moment for the other gods, hence, in a chart, when the nodes are prominent, that moment of birth is not the best IN THAT WAY. It means that some special repositioning of our attitude towards Divinity is necessary.
It is the result of past offenses to advanced souls, or, it is a sign of the readiness on your part to learn some heavier lessons in this life regarding straying from safe progressive actions and safe progressive thoughts. It can be either one of these and nobody can ever really know which. In the end it teaches detachment from material gain.
The heavy wordings of Yogas as per Indian books cannot be taken literally of course. Kal Sarpa people are numerous as these combinations, once in the sky, can last for days.
The main effect is that the nodes must always be consulted or considered. It is as if they are "in the face" of the other gods always, and seem to therefore always have some say in all events. If other placements are good, e.g. the lagna decent, the benefic planets strong enough etc., then it would be hard to tell this life from anybody else.
But I would consider Kala Sarpa to be established if planets conjoin Rahu or Ketu because their conjunction is certainly their main sting. Stronger by far than any other sting they could carry, such as occupying the house of a lord or the Kal Sarpa wraparound. Conjunction of Rahu with Moon or Lagna is of course an extremely strong placement for trouble. Many people I know have Rahu in Lagna as I am involved with many people who have taken birth here to spread essentially ancient Indian things.
Rahu in Lagna has some meaning that "this birth is foreign", meaning that they come from another different kind of culture from their last birth, so taking birth here is an austerity "away from home" for them, therefore their lives will be full of "Rahu type" adjustment troubles throughout, until mastered. Detachment, while in action, has to be learned as per the Gita. Otherwise, everything they try to get is taken away from them.
And that last sentence is the essential thing. The nodes are all about getting “punished” while just about to steal something valuable. That is the lesson Rahu learned when Vishnu lopped his head off.
We small souls are all after things. We have false ego. This material world allows this folly in an ever changing, ever wiped clean slate of material energy set in motion in time.
Kal Sarpa means that Kal, Time, who is like a sneaky serpent, who is actually God, as Krishna says “Aham Kal" I am TIME, in the Gita, that Kal sarpa means that the soul who has that in his or her chart is wrapped up in this lesson in this life. They are blessed in one sense, in that they will taste the "finger of God" in their lives. Just when they are almost there, almost successful in their assumed ambitions, the serpent of time will appear once again. This is actually a blessing, not a curse, as cursed are those who die not knowing that their lives are controlled by divinity.
